Shukla Phant Wildlife Reserve

Shukla Phant Wildlife Reserve Shuklaphant Wildlife Reserve used to be the Royal Hunting Area for Nepalese Royals before being a national wildlife reserve in 1973. This is the first National Park of Nepal. The area of about 932 square kilometers covers of Kanchanpur District in the far western mountains of Nepal. It was established mainly for religious purposes in 1976.

A Hindu guru called Khaptad Swami - also a naturalist -- has been living in this secluded area for many years. It was because of his efforts that was set aside as a national park. Most of the park has been designated as a sacred forest. This park mainly consists of rolling hills covered with pastures and oak and coniferous forests. The name of the park is derived from the largest of these grasslands, which is known as Sukla Phanta. Shuklaphant is famous for sal forests and extensive grasslands. The reserve is important for grassland wildlife, notably its large herd of swamp deer, the threatened hispid hare, Bengal florican and swamp francolin.

This reserve is home to many endangered animals, mammals, birds and tropical plants. The climate of the region is subtropical monsoonal with mean annual rainfall that occurs from June to September and is highest in August.
