Ghode Jatra 2070 celebrated - Mar 30, 2014

Ghode Jatra or the ‘festival of horses’ was celebrated by organising a special program at the Army Pavilion, Tudikhel in Kathmandu on Sunday.

Nepal Army (NA) observed a special equestrian event including horse races and various kinds of stunts involving horses.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Vice President Parmananda Jha, Prime Minister Sushil Koiralai, Speaker Subash Nemwang along with government officials, national and international dignitaries and foreign diplomats graced the event.

Legends say that this festival came into existence as a celebration of the victory over a demon named Tundi, who resided over the meadow, which is known as Tundikhel at present.

As Tundi was a terror among people, when he died, people rejoiced by dancing with horses on his body.

It is believed that the clamour of horses' hooves on Ghode Jatra at Tundikhel keeps the demon's sprit at bay.

Although the parade of the horses is the major attraction of the festival, numerous events - cultural programs, motorcycle displays, and gymnastic performances - are staged on the occasion.

The government has declared a public holiday in Kathmandu valley to mark Ghode Jatra, the carnival of horses.
